Student Life

Academic activities at the College of Health Sciences are carried out by dedicated and committed faculty members, who together with non-teaching staff add enviable aura to life at the College for roughly 2,500 undergraduate, postgraduate and professional students. With students from different ethnic and religious background, the heterogeneous environment of the University as a whole and the College in particular make education an interesting and consummate experience. Students liaise with each other and with the aid of the various student organizations they discover ways in which they can help to improve medical education and clinical experience, at the same time, they have opportunities to pursue their individual interests.

Pre-Clinical Years

Students in their first year study advanced level courses in Sciences and Social sciences subjects. This is followed by Basic Medical Sciences courses such as Anatomy, Biochemistry, Physiology and Pharmacology lasting a period of two years. Throughout these periods, all students are resident in the University, with facilities for teaching and practice being available on the campus.

Clinical Years

Basic Medical and Clinical courses are taken in the three years of Clinical programme. Facilities for this programme are partly on campus and partly at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex, Ile Ife and its various annexes – Wesley Guild Hospital, Ilesa, Urban Comprehensive Health Centre, Eleyele, Ile-Ife, Dental Hospital within campus, Multipurpose Health Centre, Ilesa, Rural Comprehensive Health Centre, Imesi-Ile, Osun State.

Students who are already on their clinical programmes do not observe the usual University long vacations. They may only have short breaks in between academic sessions and national public holidays.

With reference to clinical programmes especially in Medicine and Dentistry, College year normally begins in the first week of August and continues to June of the following year with two weeks of break at Christmas, one week at Easter and one month in July. During the rest of the year, students are in continuous residence.

Final Year

After successful completion of the six years of studentship and awarded with a temporary medical license, students initiated via induction ceremony into the Nigeria Medical Association. This is followed by a compulsory one-year training period of supervised practice of medicine in an accredited centre, usually a teaching hospital.
