Dr Adenekan had his primary and secondary education in Lagos before proceeding to the University of Jos for tertiary education. He qualified as medical doctor in September 1997. He worked as a Medical Officer in a Mission hospital for a year before proceeding for speciality training in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care at the Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex, Ile-Ife, Nigeria in 2001. He completed his training to time and was awarded the Fellowship of the West African College of Surgeons in 2007.

He was appointed in the University as Lecturer 1 in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care in 2007. He is also an Honorary Consultant Anaesthetist/Intensivist to the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. He worked as Visiting Anaesthetist at the Cardiac Surgery Centre of the Alexandria University, Egypt for six months between 1998 and 1999.
