HOD's Welcome Address
In the last decade or so, there has been an increase in the awareness of oral health; more teeth are persevered in the mouth, aesthetic tooth restorations are more in demand including dental implants. The mission of Department of Restorative Dentistry is to graduate students who have the scientific and clinical competence to provide excellent restorative care and the hunger to seek knowledge in new frontiers of dentistry and be life-long learners.
The academic staff provides clinical learning environment that encourages high standards, performs scholarly activities that will advance the specialty while keeping abreast of current literature and treatment modalities. In all, the oral health care of the average Nigerian is paramount; teaching and learning are towards the provision of rational restorative treatment that is in the best interest of the patient.
The department houses six units in the faculty of Dentistry: Dental Materials Science; Operative Dentistry; Fixed; Removable and Implant Prosthodontics; Endodontics; and Esthetic Dentistry. Even before the students get into the clinics, they are expected to acquire a sound knowledge of the science of restorative dental materials, operative and prosthetic techniques and simple endodontics.
In the clinics, all contemporary treatment modalities are taught; the use of silver amalgam and other metal alloys, anterior and posterior composite up to all ceramic restorations yet the vitality of the tooth, plus conservation of the tooth including minimally invasive dentistry are strongly emphasized.
Our pride is our laboratory where virtually all procedures can be started and finished by students and staff. This gives our students an edge in that they can function adequately in situations where laboratory hands are not available or not competent to deliver such services.
Thank you as you explore the world of Restorative Dentistry in OAU.
