The Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry is within the Faculty of Dentistry, College of Health Sciences, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. Closely sited is the Dental Clinics of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex, Ile-Ife. The department house the following units, Community Dentistry, Law and ethics, Periodontology, Oral Medicine, Oral Radiology and Oral Diagnosis.
HOD’s Welcome Address
I am using this opportunity to welcome everyone to the website of the Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. The department is one of the four departments in the Faculty of Dentistry. We have seasoned academic and non-academic staffs that provide a strong resource base for day to day clinical training and outreach programmes.
We are committed to both undergraduate training as well as the postgraduate programmes in Dental Public Health Education. Our postgraduate programme is the first in the West African sub region. The postgraduate programmes available are Professional Masters leading to the award of MDPH degree, MSc and PhD in Dental Public Health. Our graduates routinely attain positions as researchers and leaders in dentistry, industry, education, and research institutions. The department enjoys strong collaboration with the institute of Public Health. The students of the department enjoy field work with the Primary Health Care, Okooko-Ipetumodu, near Ile-Ife and Urban Comprehensive Health Centre, Eleyele, Ile-Ife. Our department combines exposure to theoretical and practical basis of the art of preventing disease and promoting oral and general health.
The staffs of the department undergo research in various Dental Public health field leading to immense contribution to the acquisition of recent scientific knowledge and skills in the field.

Objectives and Goal
The Goal of the Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry is to lead the way in training, research and service in preventive and community dentistry at undergraduate, postgraduate, local, national and international levels.
The Objectives are to:
- provide quality oral and general health care service to the population with emphasis on prevention.
- train undergraduate and postgraduate students who will be able to function effectively in health care planning, service delivery, administration and research at local and international levels, and compete anywhere in the world with other graduates in the areas of Preventive and Community dentistry.
- contribute significantly to research developments in preventive and community dentistry
- attain international recognition in research and service for the improvement of oral health and offer advice to governments and other bodies in the area of preventive and public health/community dentistry, including policy formulation for health
